Keep the Bees?

I sign off with "Keep the Bees" which is a clever quip that I came up with a few years ago. It was the name of my Gold Award project in Girl Scouts. It means "beekeeping" as well as "be environmentally friendly so that we can keep bees on Earth". For my project, I taught families in my community how to keep bees. It was tons of fun and taught me a lot about presenting, budgeting, and communicating. The phrase stuck with me as well as the lessons I learned.

So, Keep the Bees!

I found the article published about me back then (I won the #1 Micro Eco Award):

Here is my picture that was in the table of contents of that issue:

I was honored to be featured in such a terrific magazine. My one minute of (micro) fame.
Pretty cool!

About me

A little bit about me and my background.

I have been beekeeping for 8 years. My family has been "urban farming" for quite a few years by growing fruit trees, herbs, veggies, and keeping various animals on our one acre of land. We stumbled upon beekeeping by receiving a hive from our neighbor. My dad was hesitant at first, but then before we knew it we were beekeeping! It was confusing at first (especially for a 12 year old) but quite interesting. I have loved beekeeping and honey bees ever since. It actually led me to becoming a Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems major at UC Davis. I love learning about nature, the environment, human impact, sustainability, and food!

I will be posting about connections of sustainability to what I'm doing in Jamaica. My goal is to work as an intern, to learn, and also to make connections. Connections with people, with nature, and with ideas. I am guessing I will also post news articles, websites, and funny pictures. I find them constantly and am looking forward to posting them in a place that can be enjoyed by those interested.

First Post: What's this all about?

Hello!

A little about what I'm doing:

I was accepted to an internship in Jamaica for Top-Bar Beekeeping. I applied through my school (UC Davis) early in the year. It combined my passion of beekeeping with my intent to travel at some point in my college career. It had the bonus of doing actual work instead of merely playing the tourist.

I was encouraged to keep a record of my travels by blogging for my internship. I think it's a great way to keep track of what I do.

Hopefully it will be a fun, informative, and engaging blog! We'll see.
